IN A SHELTERED COVE with a gently sloping lawn towards the lakefront and mature trees framing views of the water, the clients immediately fell in love with the site. The importance of maintaining the natural privacy while connecting the indoors to the lakeside is paramount.

The design is a balance between an exterior addressing the context of the New Hampshire Lakes Region and an interior with a calm and sophisticated atmosphere. Both have a tranquil sensibility contributing to the enjoyable qualities of this lake home.

WITH MANY TRADITIONAL characteristics of colonial architecture; strong symmetry, repetitive bays, bookend chimneys, this family home is full of New England charm.

Working with the homeowners was great fun. Research went into all aspects, especially with attention to historic masonry techniques, and no detail was left to chance. Breaking from traditional colonial home plans, the more open design of the first floor addresses the client’s goal of having ample gathering space for their children and grandchildren when they vacation each summer and during holidays.

A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT of stone and brick in conjunction with other vernacular lakefront architectural precedents contribute to a unique aesthetic with strong historic roots.

The landscape ties home and site seamlessly while addressing the needs of construction near sensitive lakefront resources. The entry court uses modern construction techniques to capture storm water while maintaining an aesthetic true to the character of the home. Multiple intimate outdoor spaces echo materials of the home while taking advantage of the long southerly views.

BUILDING A LAKEFRONT HOME inherently addresses a principle of sustainable design as a primary goal, connecting to nature. This goal stems from a deep love and respect for the lake, its inhabitants and those with whom we share.

Those precepts lead the design and construction process by, minimizing footprint, reducing site impact, eliminating onsite fossil fuels, methodically sealing the building envelope, using high quality windows, specifying a high efficiency geothermal heat pump, using 100% LED lighting, on-site treatment of all storm water runoff, integrating an electric car charging station, and installing roof mounted photovoltaic panels. The goal and result is a home that reduces negative impacts on the environment and promotes the health, wellness and enjoyment of nature for this family and future generations.

THE ORIGINAL LAKE SUNAPEE COTTAGE was replaced with consideration to the classic Victorian homes of the neighborhood. Houses only eight feet from either side led the design to maximize allowable living space on the site for activities of all seasons.

The exterior of the home complements the surrounding architecture of Blodgett Landing while the interior boasts a more contemporary atmosphere.  The sculptural open stair greets one upon entry and allows easy travel from floor to floor. With young children and an active lifestyle, the homeowners’ goals were easy lake access, plenty of storage space, low maintenance, and casual private and common areas for family and guests.

ORIENTED TO PLACE many rooms on the lakeside to capture the essential views and breezes, the design draws upon steep gabled Victorian cottages of a past era while integrating features of the current lakeside vernacular.

This home with its close proximity to deck, beach, and dock is designed to maximize a relatively small site for family vacations and gatherings. Enjoyment of the multiple outdoor living spaces and screen porch from spring to fall combined with the warmth of the wood interiors and fieldstone fireplace creates a comfortable year-round home.

WITH STUNNING VIEWS OF THE MT. SUNAPEE SKI AREA, this lakeside home is designed as a primary residence for an active young family. Planning for skiing, lake activities, outdoor sports and family gatherings, this home on the beautiful shores of Lake Sunapee also has the good fortune to have an existing boathouse. This busy couple and their family were very active participants in the design process, their enthusiasm and energy both welcome and contagious!

THIS NEW HAMPSHIRE SEA COAST home takes advantage of its unique ocean view and seaside breezes resulting in a comfortable seasonal home.

The primary challenges of this project were to take advantage of the second-floor views of the Atlantic and maximize the southern exposure and ocean winds, while designing the home within the very limited area of the site.  The client envisioned an open first floor consisting of living, dining and exterior decks to entertain family and friends.

INSPIRED BY A GRAND TREE ON THE PROPERTY, the central fireplace anchors the design while the timber frame boldly spreads out to create a unique and sheltering structure.

Spectacular views of the valleys and mountains, an open central living space, and connections to the outdoors are principal priorities. The warmth and beauty of the timber contrast and complement the solidity of the central masonry fireplace. Abundant stone from the site is utilized in the landscape design for retaining and seating walls as well as defining outdoor entertaining areas which are all easily accessible from the home and outdoor kitchen.
