COMING BACK TO NEW HAMPSHIRE TO BE NEAR FAMILY was the impetus for this home in the mountains. The couple embarked on the design process with several priorities; comfort for family and guests, flexibility in the utility of the spaces, and entirely off the utility grid.

The home has roots in the New England barn aesthetic; simple lines, utility, a timber frame structure, and reclaimed materials. Rooms have multiple functions for large gatherings or housing family for extended stays, and the kitchen is large, open, versatile and straightforward, affording everyone a hand in preparing meals.

The timber frame employs traditional mortise and tenon joinery in addition to keyed beams and a cupola framed utilizing a unique method of reciprocal framing. Through careful equipment, appliance and lighting selections the 12 KW solar array supplies the home with all the electricity it requires. Additionally, the stone for the house and outdoor fireplace were gathered entirely from the building site.

The landscape is intentionally minimal, highly functional, and low maintenance; allowing the natural beauty of this site to take center stage. Expansive meadows meet dense upland forests, both of which are dominated by the mountainous horizon. Irregular flagstone patios, handpicked fieldstone and boulders harvested from the site perfectly complement naturalized plantings and are genuinely appropriate and sustainable.

Collaboration between the homeowners, builder, structural engineer, interior designer, our firm, and the multitude of talented tradespeople and artisans made this not just a beautiful home but a thoughtful and enjoyable process!
