This home was chosen as the 2019 New Hampshire Home Magazine Winner-Green Design.
Coming back to New Hampshire to be near family and build a home in a rural oasis of flora, fauna and astonishing views was the impetus for this home in the mountains. The couple embarked on the design process with several priorities; comfort for family and guests, flexibility in the utility of the spaces, and entirely off the grid.
The 3,700 square foot home has roots in the New England barn aesthetic. Simple lines; utility in access to the building for equipment, workshop, tools, and cars; a timber frame structure; and reclaimed materials, all contribute to the comfort and functionality. Rooms have multiple functions for large gatherings or housing family for extended stays, and the kitchen is large, open, versatile and straightforward, affording everyone a hand in preparing meals!
The timber frame employs traditional mortise and tenon joinery in addition to several less used framing techniques; keyed beams utilize sheer blocks and steel straps to form a composite beam capable of large spans while using smaller, new growth timbers; the cupola is framed utilizing reciprocal framing, a self-supporting system which requires no center posts or connections. Reclaimed barn boards, reclaimed flooring, and ship lap walls add to the warmth and comfort of the space. Additionally, the veneer and outdoor fireplace were stone gathered entirely from the building site.
Through careful equipment, appliance and lighting selections the 14 KW array supplies the home with all the electricity it requires. The outbuilding houses the battery banks to provide power in the evenings and during long winter storms. The home also utilizes Structural Insulated Panels for a high R-value and well-sealed building envelope.
Collaboration between the homeowners, Broome Builders, Lisa Ellis Interior Design, our firm, and the multitude of talented tradespeople and artisans made this not just a beautiful home but a thoughtful and enjoyable process!
